  What Makes a Sealant Green

Each year it seems the interest in green building becomes stronger through the efforts of environmentalists, builders and home owners. However, the guidelines for “green” seem to still be up for discussion. One component of green that everyone can agree on is the reduction or elimination of volatile organic compounds or VOCs.

Today, many of these products can be manufactured with little or no VOCs while maintaining the same physical characteristics and the high performance expected in construction. Geocel understands the homeowner’s desire to live a healthy lifestyle and the role their home plays in this endeavor. That is why many of Geocel’s sealants and adhesives directly support the green building process and healthy living.

When choosing green sealants and adhesives, look for products that meet both energy efficiency and global environmental standards.  Green sealants and adhesives should contribute in three ways: 1. by improving a building’s energy efficiency, 2. by minimizing the release of significant pollutants (VOCs) into a structure, improving the air quality of the structure and the environment and 3. by using recycled materials to decrease environment destruction. To begin the selection process for green sealants and adhesives, look for products that meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED guidelines and the NAHB guidelines for acceptable VOC content. The VOC guidelines from USGBC are less than 250 grams per liter for sealants, less than 50 grams per liter for sub-floor adhesives and less than 70 grams per liter for multipurpose adhesives. NAHB’s VOC guidelines are less than 60 grams per liter for sealants and less than 200 grams per liter for adhesives.

Just as all things have a life cycle and eventually evolve, the same holds true for sealants and adhesives. Geocel has recognized this and is positioned to meet the demands of developing sustainable building products for a greener future.
